SHAHID AFRIDI last night vowed to quit as Pakistan cricket captain in the wake of his side's 150-run defeat to Australia.

The 30-year-old, who will stand down after the second Test, reckons he's a bad example to his team-mates and not strong enough mentally for the five-day version of the sport.

Part-time off-spinner Marcus North emerged as the Aussies' unexpected match-winner, taking six for 55 as Pakistan were bowled out for 289 in pursuit of 440 at Lord's.

Afridi, out yesterday for two, said: "My temperament is not good enough to play Test cricket.

"Over the last four years I've played a lot of one-dayers and Twenty20s so I am going in with the same temperament.

"Captains should be an example for youngsters and for the team but I didn't show any example. I am not capable of playing Test cricket. If I play like this it is better to leave."
